For 18 seasons, the Indian Premier League has been more than just a cricket tournament. It has created heroes and built rivalries. It has also produced moments fans still talk about years later. Since it started in 2008, eight different teams have won the trophy. But two teams have clearly ruled this league – Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, both winning five titles each.

It all began in 2008 with Rajasthan Royals lifting the first trophy under Shane Warne. They were not the favorites. Many thought they did not even have the strongest squad. But Warne and that first season set the tone that anything can happen.

Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings: Why These Two Franchises Own the IPL Winners List

Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings have 5 IPL titles each. Both teams stay calm in pressure games, which helps them win close matches. MS Dhoni made CSK very consistent. CSK reached the playoffs 12 times in 15 seasons and reached 10 finals, winning 5. Rohit Sharma changed MI after becoming captain in 2013. He led MI to all five of their 5 titles. MI also found and developed players like Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya.

How Rohit Sharma Led Mumbai Indians to Five Titles and Cemented His Legacy as IPL’s Greatest Captain

Rohit Sharma made the Mumbai Indians a winning team by staying calm, building team confidence, and trusting his players. He helped MI win 5 IPL titles, the most by any captain.

In 2013, MI were struggling under Ricky Ponting. Rohit took over mid-season and slowly improved team confidence. In the final against CSK, MI scored 148, which was not a big score. But their bowlers stopped CSK at 125/9, giving MI their first title under Rohit.

In 2015, MI had a bad start, winning only 2 of their first 7 matches. Rohit kept the team calm. MI won 6 of the next 7 matches and reached the final again. Rohit scored 50 off 26 balls in the final, helping MI win by 41 runs.

In 2017, MI won one of the closest IPL finals ever. They defended 130 runs and won by just 1 run on the last ball against the Rising Pune Supergiant. In 2019, MI again beat CSK in a very close final. In 2020, MI topped the table and won the final easily. Rohit is the only captain with 100% final win record (5 wins in 5 finals).

MS Dhoni and the CSK Formula That Made Them Champions Five Times in Three Different Decades

CSK has won 3 titles in the 2010s and 2 titles in the 2020s. If a player does not fit, they can be replaced, even if they are talented. MS Dhoni believes team balance is more important than star power. This keeps the team stable.

CSK trusts experienced players. They keep senior players for a long time instead of changing the squad often. Players like MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, and Ravindra Jadeja stayed key players for many years. This helps team bonding and helps in pressure games.

The Dhoni–Fleming partnership is another strength. They keep the team environment relaxed. Players get freedom in training. Dhoni keeps tactics simple during matches and focuses on smart decisions, which helped CSK stay consistent and win matches.

The Most Dramatic Finals in IPL Winners List History That Fans Will Never Forget

2025 Final – After eighteen years, RCB finally won their first IPL championship in the 2025 Final. They beat PBKS by just 6 runs in a close finish. Virat Kohli played a calm and steady innings to help hold the team together. After winning, Kohli became emotional with the fans.

2019 Final – MI vs CSK was one of the closest IPL finals. MI scored 149/8 with Pollard’s 41 helping them set a defendable target. CSK almost chased it, but Malinga bowled a perfect slower yorker on the last ball. MI won by just 1 run.

2016 Final – SRH stopped RCB from winning their first title. SRH scored 208/7 with Warner scoring 69. RCB had a strong start but lost in the death overs. SRH won by 8 runs to win their first IPL trophy.

2023 Final – Rain reduced the target to 171 in 15 overs. CSK needed 10 runs from 2 balls. Jadeja hit a six and then a four to win the match. This gave Dhoni his fifth IPL title.

2008 Final – The first IPL final was very close. CSK scored 163/5, and RR chased the target and won with one ball left.

Underdog Champions on the IPL Winners List and the Seasons Nobody Saw Coming

2008 – Rajasthan Royals were the cheapest team in the first IPL season, but they still won. Shane Warne used smart tactics and found good players like Yusuf Pathan and Sohail Tanvir. In the final, RR were in trouble while chasing, but Yusuf Pathan scored 56 off 39 balls. RR won with one ball left.

2009 – Deccan Chargers bounced back after finishing last in 2008. Adam Gilchrist led the team and helped them reach the playoffs because of a better net run rate. They beat strong teams and won the final with a good bowling performance.

2022 – Gujarat Titans won the IPL in their first season. Hardik Pandya led the team well. In the final, GT restricted Rajasthan Royals to 130/9, where Hardik took 3 wickets. Shubman Gill finished the chase with a six.

2025 – RCB finally won after 17 years. They focused more on bowling strength. In the final against PBKS, Krunal Pandya bowled well. After winning, Virat Kohli became emotional because it was a long wait for the fans.

SWOT Analysis of Kolkata Knight Riders as Three-Time IPL Champions

KKR has a strong leadership history under Gambhir and later Iyer. They have a good balance between batting and bowling when the team performs well. But they depend too much on big hitters, and the middle order sometimes fails under pressure. Bowling consistency was also not always good in some seasons.

There are good future chances for this team. Young players like Finn Allen, Rachin Ravindra, and Pathirana can become big match winners. The new coaching staff can help build a strong team. However, young players might require some time to adjust to the pressure of the IPL, and there will be fierce competition from other well-rounded teams.

The Teams That Are Still Waiting to Add Their Name to the IPL Winners List

After eighteen seasons, the Punjab Kings have yet to claim a championship. They only made it to the final twice, once in 2025 and once in 2014. In those two years, they lost both times. As of the 2025 season, the team have a roughly 45% win rate.

Delhi Capitals are also still waiting for their first IPL trophy since 2008; their best chance was in 2020 when they reached the final but lost. They had problems with changing captains and team combinations. Their win rate is also about 45%.

In 2022, the Lucknow Super Giants entered the IPL. Despite playing well, they haven’t yet advanced to the final. They made it to the playoffs three times in four seasons but still missed out on the knockout stages. They will rely on players like Nicholas Pooran and Rishabh Pant to bat well in 2026.

    Final Words

The IPL began with Rajasthan Royals shocking everyone in 2008 under Shane Warne. It saw Kolkata Knight Riders rise under Gautam Gambhir. And then saw the return strongly in 2024 with a dominant final win. It saw new teams like the Gujarat Titans win in their very first season.

Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings lead the history with five titles each. Teams like the Kolkata Knight Riders and Gujarat Titans proved that smart planning and balance can quickly turn a team into champions. At the same time, teams such as the Punjab Kings and the Delhi Capitals are still chasing their first trophy despite reaching finals.

That is why fans keep watching. Every year, a new story begins. Which team do you think will win more IPL titles in the future?
